What is Informatica?

INFORMATICA POWERCENTER — OVERVIEW
Informatica is a ETL tool provided by 'Informatica Corporation', it is used to Extraction, Transformation and Load process all types databases. Now a day’s Informatica is also being used as an Integration tool and it is Service Oriented Architecture.

Informatica is an easy to use tool. It has got a simple visual interface like forms in visual basic. You just need to drag and drop different objects (known as transformations) and design process flow for Data extraction transformation and load. These process flow diagrams are known as mappings. Once a mapping is made, it can be scheduled to run as and when required. In the background Informatica server takes care of fetching data from source, transforming it, & loading it to the target systems/databases/Flat Files.

Informatica can communicate with all major data sources (mainframe/RDBMS/Flat Files/XML/VSM/SAP etc), can move/transform data between them. It can move huge volumes of data in a very effective way, many a times better than even bespoke programs written for specific data movement only. It can throttle the transactions (do big updates in small chunks to avoid long locking and filling the transactional log). It can effectively join data from two distinct data sources (even a xml file can be joined with a relational table). In all, Informatica has got the ability to effectively integrate heterogeneous data sources & converting raw data into useful information.

OVERVIEW:
PowerCenter is Informatica's enterprise-wide data integration platform solution. It is used to access, transform, and integrate data from a large variety of systems and deliver that information to other systems. It enables organizations to create a single, consistent enterprise-wide information resource and get a holistic view of the data.
PowerCenter Options
  • Partitioning: using parallel processing on multiprocessor hardware, partitioning optimizes performance by using multi-threaded processes
  • Real-time: augments the ability to execute processes on demand and in batch from previous versions
  • Data Cleansing: Informatica has partnered with companies such as FirstLogic and Trillium whose core competency is the standardization of name and address information
  • Data Profiling: allows Informatica developers and other data warehouse practitioners (with a bit of training) to perform data analysis on source data before building mappings
  • Metadata Exchange: provides the ability to easily detect changes between data models or BI tools, and objects in the Informatica repository

    1. Hi Mate,

Amaze! I have been looking bing for hours because of this and i also in the end think it is in this article! Maybe I recommend you something helps me all the time?

As of now i can think of one logic dont know how far it works ...lets give a try and let me know.

Create another mapping and try to create a dynamic paramter file with the lookup value you are discussing ( Just a target file with one column as string datatype (255).)

      like $$Expr_Var=A+B+C

And the main mapping you define a mapping variable $$Expr_Var (Make sure you select IS_EXPR_VAR is true. Use the parameter file in the session and use the above variable in the calculation..so it will treat as a expression rather than mere string value.

      Hope it should work.

Awesome! Thanks for putting this all in one place. Very useful!

      Many Thanks,

  53. Hi Goutham,

Nice to be visiting your blog again, it has been months for me. Well this article that i’ve been waited for so long.
Given this, I would be surprised to see anything on the test that was not covered in the modules, as it relates to the Cloud tool and topics covered about IDQ. I would presume questions that test general ETL transformation knowledge based on past Power Centre tool experience.
Once the data has been cleansed and standardized, duplicate records can be identified using various different matching techniques. This is also a developer task performed in the Developer Tool.

But great job, do keep posted with the new updates.

  66. Marhaba,

Smokin hot stuff! You’ve trimmed my dim. I feel as bright and fresh as your prolific website and blogs!

As per reply from Nico, every installation is unique and it is only possible to give general guidelines without knowing specific details about your installation.
That said, here are some things to consider...
    Repository and EDW database
Everything PowerCenter does involves the repository database.
Most of your ETL processing will involve the EDW database.
Read the installation guide about the repository database and the EDW database and make the recommended settings. Consider page size and locking behaviour.
What size packets are you using? Could you be using bigger packets?
Also check the knowledge base for articles relating to your repository and EDW databases.
Consider database location. The closer to the Informatica server the better.
    • Disk technology and network technology
Every time data moves either to or from an executing job, it costs you time.
Database reads, database writes, file access, swap files and Informatica cache files all slow you down.
Solid state disks are faster then traditional hard drives. Solid state storage arrays are faster still.
Fibre (fiber) is better than copper. Multi channel is better than single channel.
    Application platforms are worth investigating.
    • The Informatica Server itself.
Informatica loves memory. If you can give it enough memory so that it can complete active transformation activities in memory, you're on to a winner. Read the performance tuning guide regarding optimizing transformations.
Did you know... If the sorter transformation can't sort the complete data set in memory, it will send it all to disk and do the sort from disk. Very expensive!
Use the memory settings (Auto memory and specific transformation memory) in the session to keep as much processing in memory as possible.
Have the cache folder location local to the server and make it big.
    • Housekeeping, maintenance, troubleshooting and reviews.
Use all the tools you can to review and analyse your environment.
Investigate long running workflows/sessions and try to boost their performance.

Great effort, I wish I saw it earlier. Would have saved my day :)

    Thanks,
    Irene Hynes

  68. Hi Mate,

You make learning and reading addictive. All eyes fixed on you. Thank you being such a good and trust worthy guide.
I started using Informatica IDQ training USA blog for my training practice.

could you please check the link again that you've sent? I only get an error message that a Sharepoint error had occurred.

As of my understanding the PowerExchange products cannot be used with PowerCenter Express (PCX). PCX does provide quite a few connectivity options, so if you can find some ODBC or JDBC driver to access SFDC you might be able to get your job done. Otherwise I fear you will have to switch to one of the full-fledged PowerCenter or Informatica Data Quality products.

But great job man, do keep posted with the new updates.

    Best Regards,
    Krishna kumar

  69. Hello Goutham,

Nice to be visiting your blog again, it has been months for me. Well this article that i’ve been waited for so long.

Since posting this, I did a little more research.  Looks like the @ and : characters are not legal.  And that they need to be URL encoded.

I tested this.  When unencoded, the hyperlink is broken.  When encoded, the hyperlink renders properly.
A major benefit of Informatica Data Quality(IDQ) is increasing confidence and trust in enterprise data by making data quality more visible and more relevant to the business Informatica IDQ training USA.
